Fast food chains are always trying to reinvent themselves, desperately trying to carve out another sliver of market share.
That often results in some level of shock value to get people to notice and, if you’re really lucky, to share the new offering on social media.
Enter the KFC Double Down
Back in 2010, KFC unleashed upon the public the Double Down, a sandwich that features no bread, but two pieces of fried chicken as the “bun,” with two slices of cheese, bacon and either mayo or spice sauce in the middle.
When the Double Down was released, it certainly accomplished what the chain set out to do. Not only did KFC ultimately go on to sell ten million Double Down sandwiches, but it truly had a hold over society for what felt like weeks. In the social media age, there really hasn’t been any other fast food product that entered the zeitgeist quite like the Double Down.
It seemed like an incomprehensible invention, and perhaps the truest sign that we had reached out gluttonous peak. And while it had another short run in 2014, the world has been without the Double Down since.
Until now.
The Double Down Is Back in Our Lives
Starting March 6, the Double Down will once again invade our lives and force us all to contend with the havoc we have created on this planet. Like before, this current incarnation of the Double Down will only be with us for a limited time, but there’s no telling what we’ll all look like when we come out the other side.
